SUMMARY:A Festival of WS Gilbert Plays
DESCRIPTION:One Act Wonders! In its final production for 2025\, Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria offers a rare opportunity to discover a collection of four neglected one-act plays from master librettist\, W.S Gilbert across one evening’s entertainment (and two weekend matinees). \nMostly remembered today for his famous collaboration with Arthur Sullivan\, as a young barrister Gilbert found himself waiting for all too infrequent briefs and he turned to writing. Testament to his talent\, soon after\, he was earning his living as a playwright and librettist. Gilbert continued to write plays throughout his busy creative life with his last\, The Hooligan\, completed only four months before he died. \nThis collection demonstrates Gilbert’s wide-ranging interests and styles over 40 years and\, over 100 years after their creation\, hold the stage well today. Directed by a new generation\, come and enjoy: \nComedy and Tragedy – Directed by Ben Klein. An actress finds a deadly solution to her tricky romantic situation. A masterpiece of dramatic irony;\nRosencrantz and Guildenstern – Directed by Sarah Berry. In a reimagined parody of Shakespeare’s hugely popular ‘Hamlet’\, Rosencrantz and Ophelia scheme to get rid of Hamlet so they can be together;\nCreatures of Impulse – Directed by Danielle Zuccala. A fairy toys with guests at an inn for her own devious pleasure. Pure slapstick fun\, and\nThe Hooligan – Directed by Naomi Tooby. A condemned man pleads for justice. A sophisticated character study.

SUMMARY:Arsenic and Old Lace
DESCRIPTION:.  ItArsenic and Old Lace By Joseph Kesselring \nDirected by Peter Newling \nArsenic and Old Lace is a timeless and classic comedy.  It was a hit both on Broadway and in the West End. \nDrama critic Mortimer Brewster’s engagement announcement is upended when he discovers a corpse in his elderly aunts’ window seat. Mortimer rushes to tell Abby and Martha before they stumble upon the body themselves\, only to learn that the two old women aren’t just aware of the dead man in their parlor\, they killed him! \nBetween his aunts’ penchant for poisoning wine\, a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt\, and another brother using plastic surgery to hide from the police—not to mention Mortimer’s own hesitancy about marriage—it’ll be a miracle if Mortimer makes it to his wedding. \nArsenic and Old Lace is a classic black comedy about the only thing more deadly than poison: family.

DESCRIPTION:Your Name Means Dream weaves a tapestry of love\, longing\, and identity. Set against the backdrop of a mythical Latin American village\, the play explores the lives of characters whose dreams and realities intertwine in a magical and poignant journey. Rivera’s lyrical storytelling and rich character development create a moving and unforgettable theatrical experience. \nYour Name Means Dream by Oscar nominee and Obie-winning Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries) will take the stage in October. \nIn a world where the line between humanity and machine is blurring by the second\, the play examines how we live\, die\, and form our sense of self. \n“Five ladies quit on me in the last year. So they send the machines. The fucking\, soulless\, plastic fuckin’ machines.” \nAislin is getting older in a world that is becoming increasingly unfamiliar to her. Her caregiver Stacy is perfectly toned\, ageless\, and utterly in control. She’s also a robot. These scripts are exhilarating and exceptionally well written; they demand the intimate\, hard-hitting performances we’re known for at Red Stitch. It’s going to be a powerful year in the theatre.”

SUMMARY:Admissions
DESCRIPTION:Admissions: A Provocative Examination of Privilege and Progressive Values\n“Admissions” is a thought-provoking satirical play that scrutinises the complexities of privilege\, power\, and progressive ideals within the context of the education system. Set in an elite New England preparatory school\, the narrative revolves around Sherri Rosen-Mason\, the head of admissions\, and her husband Bill\, the school’s principal.\nThe couple’s commitment to increasing diversity at their institution faces a critical test when their son’s Ivy League aspirations clash with their professed values. This conflict serves as a catalyst\, exposing the tensions between personal ambition and social ideals.\nThrough its sharp wit and incisive commentary\, “Admissions” challenges audiences to confront their own beliefs and biases. The play delves into the often-hypocritical nature of well-intentioned efforts to promote inclusivity\, questioning the limits of individual sacrifice for societal change.\nBy blending caustic humour with serious social critique\, “Admissions” offers a nuanced exploration of contemporary issues. It invites viewers to reflect on the true extent of their commitment to progressive values when personal interests are at stake\, ultimately asking: How far are we willing to go to see the change we claim to want in the world?

SUMMARY:Romeo and Julie
DESCRIPTION:Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre proudly presents the Australian premiere of Romeo and Julie\, a modern and comedic love story by acclaimed Welsh playwright Gary Owen. Directed by the award-winning Kamarra Bell-Wykes. \nAbout the Play:\nRomeo and Julie garnered 5-star reviews during its successful run at the National Theatre and Sherman Theatre in the UK. Despite its familiar-sounding title\, this play tells a fresh story about Romeo\, a single dad\, and Julie\, a young woman determined to study physics at university. Though they grew up only a few streets apart\, Romeo and Julie come from vastly different worlds. His play Killology won Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre at the 2018 Olivier Awards.   And his show Violence and Son was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2016. Iphigenia in Splott received the Best New Play award at the UK Theatre Awards in 2015 and was listed as one of The Guardian’s 50 best theatre shows of the 21st century. Later this year\, Iphigenia in Splott will return to Red Stitch by popular demand.
