SUMMARY:Smokescreen
DESCRIPTION:A razor-sharp powerplay about the dark arts of marketing behind climate denial. \nIt’s 1977. Glenn has a crisis on his hands. He’s had a successful career as a marketing exec. for a major Oil company\, selling the fuel that powers the American Dream. Now he’s waking up to the damage it’s doing to the climate. In a secret meeting\, he consults with Bud\, a slick young talent from the Tobacco industry\, to figure out how to sell a toxic product – and how to live with yourself if you succeed. \nCompelling\, unnerving\, and piercingly relevant\, Smokescreen is a psychologically-charged battle of wits that reveals how the climate crisis we face today was shaped by the invisible hands of Ad men. \nSearing performances by Damon Baudin (Boys on the Verge of Tears\, Romeo and Julie)\, and C.S. Carroll (I Have No Enemies\, The Cadaver Palaver) collide in a pressure-cooker of manipulation\, morality\, and earth-shattering choices about controlling the narrative while the planet burns.

SUMMARY:All is Good.. in the Glow of Moonlight
DESCRIPTION:by simon starr and joseph sherman \nIn a smoky\, moonlit afterlife\, Jewish writer Isaac Babel meets his most notorious invention: the gangster king of Odessa\, Benya Krik. As they spar\, remember\, and relive the past\, stories blur with history\, and fiction bites back. Set to music and rich with humour\, heartbreak\, and Yiddish soul\, this lyrical dream-play asks: what happens when the characters we create demand answers?

SUMMARY:Blackrock
DESCRIPTION:“One mistake. One life. One community torn apart.” \nIt’s Toby Ackland’s birthday party down near the surf club and that should mean heaps of grog\, drugs and good clean fun. But by the morning a young girl is dead raped by three boys and bashed with a rock. \nWho is responsible? The boy? The girl? Or the whole town.\nBlackrock\, playwright Nick Enright’s play about a teen party which culminates with a brutal rape and murder on the beach\, was deeply disturbing when it was written 30 years ago. Sadly many of the themes\, which swirl around the narrative after the tragic event\, still resonant today as Australia struggles with issues of domestic abuse\, respect and gender equality. \nBlackrock was originally adapted from a 45-minute piece by Enright\, A Property of the Clan\, that was inspired by the sexual assault and murder of 14-year-old Leigh Reannea Mears\, near Newcastle in 1989. The award-winning play premiered in 1995\, became a film in 1997\, and was critically acclaimed. \nLunatix presents this intimate and strongly shaped human drama focusing in on the social forces behind the male impulse to violence and the community’s response in the aftermath\, which are actively relevant in today society. \nFeaturing a strong cast of performers including\, Fletcher Von Arx\, Bailey Griffiths\, Sabrina Hault\, Olivia Mitchell\, Javier Lumsden\, James Parker\, Samuel John\, Isabel Dickson\, Charlotte Palmer\, Cassandra Hart\, Hayley Michaels and Matt Young. \nFor more information regarding the femicide epidemic in Australia: https://australianfemicidewatch.org

SUMMARY:Soldier Boy
DESCRIPTION:by anthony hill \n“Once in a generation a mysterious wish for war passes through the people. Their instinct tells them that there is no other way of progress and of escape from habits that no longer fit them . . . There is no other way. Only by intense sufferings can the nations grow” – Sir Ian Hamilton\, Commander in Chief\, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force\, Gallipoli Campaign. \nAt just 14 years old\, Private James Martin enlisted to fight for his country\, not knowing he would never return home. SOLDIER BOY  follows his journey from Melbourne to the battlefields of Gallipoli. \nThis bold new production depicts the final hours of James Martin as he grapples with his choice to serve\, the loved ones he left behind\, and his legacy. A constantly evolving landscape of memory and reality illuminates the stark contrasts between the innocence of youth and the brutal realities of combat. \nThis visually and emotionally charged retelling of SOLDIER BOY honours Jim’s story while offering a fresh\, contemporary perspective on the ANZAC legacy—bridging history and the present in a new theatre of war.

SUMMARY:How To Hold A Sign
DESCRIPTION:It’s going to be a scorcher in Melbourne today\, and Aoife and Jackie have pulled a 12 hour shift. Standing at opposite ends of a roadwork site\, the two women realise that they couldn’t be more different. Aoife\, earnest and outgoing\, smiles warmly at passing cars through her lipstick and lashes\, while Jackie\, practical to her bones\, waves cars on with a seasoned shrug. As traffic ebbs and flows\, they find themselves caught between obeying the rules and rewriting them. \nEqual parts sly comedy and feminist critique\, How to Hold a Sign is\, above all\, a play about solidarity; a story of two women bonding and surviving in a male-dominated world. It is a love letter to working-class resilience\, a comment on systemic inequities and a celebration of the power of connection. With wit and heart\, the play invites audiences to linger on the margins\, look deeper and discover the complexities that lie in something as deceptively simple as a bright vest and a steady arm. \nBabble Productions brings their unique brand of humour\, storytelling and a touch of rebellion to the stage in this untold Aussie story.

SUMMARY:The Black Woman of Gippsland
DESCRIPTION:From Andrea James (Sunshine Super Girl) comes The Black Woman of Gippsland – a story of Victoria’s dark past that is in dire need of revisiting\, told as a thrilling modern mystery that unfolds with beauty\, tragedy and rebellion. \nA woman is tossed ashore from the sea\, bedraggled and lost. A century and a half later\, another finds herself diving deep into the truth behind a lingering legend. \nJacinta’s family is driving her up the wall and her academic career is floundering\, but amongst the books\, something doesn’t feel right about the story history tells. But Jacinta is determined to unearth the truth for herself and her Gunaikurnai family no matter the twists and turns the journey might take her on. \nBased on real events and set on Andrea’s grandmother’s country\, The Black Woman of Gippsland is a poetic\, emotionally rich and clever embracing of First Nations stories that have long been silenced.

SUMMARY:The Boys
DESCRIPTION:A family bound by an unthinkable crime. A past that keeps repeating\, a lesson still unlearned. \nGordan Graham’s play\, The Boys\, is a powerful and unsettling exploration of family and gendered violence\, examining its ripple effects on the women left in its wake. Originally inspired by the events surrounding the Anita Cobby murder\, this fictionalised account offers an intimate look at the lives of three brothers and the forces that shaped them. \nGreen Room nominated Director\, Tess Walsh\, brings this urgent story to the stage with a modernised setting—underscoring that these cycles of violence are not relics of the past but continue to be deeply ingrained in our society. The production challenges the audience to confront the complexities of these issues and reflect on the role we all play in dismantling harmful attitudes. By placing this harrowing story in the safety of a theatre setting\, The Boys invites audiences to witness\, reflect\, and engage in vital conversations about change.

SUMMARY:The Dictionary of Lost Words
DESCRIPTION:BEST-SELLING | NOVEL | ADAPTATION\nIn 1901\, the word bondmaid was discovered to be missing from the Oxford English Dictionary.\nThe Dictionary of Lost Words is the story of the girl who stole it.\nSouth Australian novelist Pip Williams’ internationally best-selling book\, comes to vivid life in this critically acclaimed stage adaptation by South Australian playwright\, Verity Laughton. \nA best-selling multi-award winner (including the People’s Choice Award at the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards) and chosen for the Reese Witherspoon Book Club\, the book has been lauded as an “absorbing\, quietly revolutionary novel”\, “deeply\, intrinsically kind (and) a profoundly comforting place to dwell” (The Age) and “a captivating and slyly subversive fictional paean to the real women whose work on the Oxford English Dictionary went largely unheralded.” (New York Times). \nMotherless and ever curious\, Esme spends her childhood in the Scriptorium – the “Scrippy”\, a converted garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of lexicographers guided by Dr James Murray are gathering words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. She hides beneath the sorting table and catches a word on a “slip” as it falls and soon\, she finds other words that have been neglected by the men. Here begins Esme’s collection of her own: the Dictionary of Lost Words. \nAs the years pass\, Esme realises that little importance is placed on recording the words and meanings relating to women’s experiences and as her world expands and her circle of friends grows – actresses\, suffragettes\, market traders\, workers\, she realises the power in their silenced voices and decides to lend them hers. And on the way\, she comes to understand the many meanings of the word “love”. \n“The Dictionary of Lost Words is a must-see… the entire season sold out before opening\, with every effort being made to find some extra seats. If you can get one\, do it. It’s unmissable.” \nThe Advertiser

SUMMARY:RBG: Of Many\, One
DESCRIPTION:“One of the all-time great performances” The Sydney Morning Herald \nAfter a triumphant premiere season in 2022\, and a sold-out national tour in 2024\, the smash-hit RBG: Of Many\, One returns to the Melbourne stage once more in 2025\, due to popular demand. \nThe brilliant Heather Mitchell will be reviving her award-winning and critically acclaimed “virtuosic performance” (The Conversation) of the woman who changed the face of the American legal system: the indomitable Ruth Bader Ginsburg. \nThe second woman to be appointed to the US Supreme Court\, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was both a trailblazer in the American judiciary and a fierce advocate for gender equality and reproductive rights. Her life is brought to the stage in an STC commissioned play by the extraordinary pen of Olivier Award-winning Australian playwright and expert legal mind\, Suzie Miller (Prima Facie). This story chronicles Ginsburg’s wins and dissents\, traces her steps forward and the steps back\, and brings you right into the room with Ruth at the most pivotal moments of her life. \nA masterstroke of directorial vision\, Priscilla Jackman reconjures RBG in this once-in-a-generation theatrical event that continues to find resonances with the political landscape of the present day. If you haven’t seen it yet\, now is your chance to witness the sensation that is “magnificent from start to finish” (Limelight).

SUMMARY:The Removalists
DESCRIPTION:David Williamson’s The Removalists is still as provocative and relevant as it was at its debut. \nWhen The Removalists premiered at Melbourne’s La Mama Theatre in 1971 it put a wrecking ball through the walls of genteel Australian theatre. Profane\, honest and arresting in its depiction of the animal side of humanity\, its most surprising revelation is in how little has changed. \nSet in an inner-suburb of Melbourne\, Fiona and Kate report an act of violence to the police hoping things will be resolved peacefully. However\, the local constabulary like to handle things their own way. Over the course of one evening the hidden currents of competition\, desire and brutality flowing beneath polite society will be dragged out into the open. \nAnne-Louise Sarks directs the bracing revival of this dark satire in a production that sets its gaze on Australia – right here\, right now – and refuses to blink. \nMelbourne Theatre Company celebrates the ongoing legacy of La Mama Theatre’s bold\, unflinching contributions to the independent theatre scene by contributing $5 from the sale of each on-stage ticket during our 2025 season of The Removalists.

SUMMARY:Pain Drunk
DESCRIPTION:Luca\, a free-spirited artist\, and Colette\, a pragmatic but restless Phd student and tutor\, collide in a whirlwind romance. Their attraction is instantaneous\, igniting a passionate relationship filled with creativity\, laughter\, and intense connection. Yet\, as their lives intertwine\, the very qualities that draw them together also drive them apart. \nOver the course of two years\, the stage transforms from their euphoric first encounters to the chaos of shared living. As Luca’s spontaneity and inability to communicate clashes with Colette’s desire for stability and closed off nature\, their differences unravel into fiery arguments\, confrontations\, and moments of tender vulnerability. Each scene explores the push and pull of their love—a dance between longing and frustration\, desire and disappointment. \nDespite their struggles\, they remain inexplicably bound to each other\, grappling with the realisation that while they are not meant to be\, the pull of their connection is impossible to ignore. As they confront their fears and insecurities\, they must decide whether to embrace the tumult or seek the solace of separation.
