SUMMARY:Phar Lap: The Electro-Swing Musical
DESCRIPTION:The musical that stops the nation \nWORLD PREMIERE \nDirected by Sheridan Harbridge \nNot just another absurdist\, electro-swing musical comedy about a thoroughbred racehorse\, Phar Lap is a rags-to-riches story with a big heart. If you’re thinking elaborate life-size puppetry and dazzling special effects\, you couldn’t be more wrong (we don’t have the budget). Suspend your disbelief as an actor swaps his horseshoes for tap shoes to play one of Australia’s most beloved icons. \nWhen an awkward\, gangly horse from New Zealand meets a hapless\, down-on-his-luck\, trainer\, they embark on a classic underdog story to win the Melbourne Cup\, and Australians’ hearts and minds. The road isn’t easy – there are gambling scandals\, double-crosses\, an attempted shooting\, and a career-threatening addiction to sugar. It’s high stakes\, high drama\, and highly historically accurate. \nPhar Lap boasts an irresistible electro-swing score\, with inspirations from Duke Ellington to Daft Punk. Brassy\, lively and retro – these songs will take you from the race course to the rave hall. \nPop the champagne\, harness up\, and get ready for a wild ride. \nPrices\nPreviews\nAdult $69\nConcession/Group (8+) $64\nUnder 35 $55\nMid-Week Matinees\nAdult $79\nConcession/Group (8+) $69\nUnder 35 $60\nWeeknights & Saturday Matinees\nAdult $84\nConcession/Group (8+) $74\nUnder 35 $65\nFriday & Saturday Evenings\nAdult $89\nConcession/Group (8+) $79\n*Concession prices apply to Seniors\, Pensioners\, Students and MEAA members.\nTimes\nMonday 6:30pm\nTuesday – Saturday 7:30pm\nThursday 1:00pm\nSaturday 2:00pm\n*No matinee performance on Sat 18 Oct\n*No matinee performance on Thu 23 Oct\n*Post show Q&A on Mon 27 Oct\n*Captioned performance on Wed 5 Nov\nRunning Time\nApprox. 90 minutes – no interval\nAccessibility\nWheelchair Accessible\nCaptioned Performance – WED 5 NOV

SUMMARY:Control by Keziah Warner
DESCRIPTION:For the first time since its original production by Red Stitch Theatre in 2019\, Keziah Warner’s epic sci-fi odyssey Control is back in Melbourne. \nIn the not-so-distant future\, a heavily pregnant ex-ballerina\, a child detective\, a bitter puppeteer and a feminist pop princess hurtle towards Mars in a Big Brother-style spaceship. The world is watching. Isn’t it? \nOn the eve of a revolution\, Nicki and Caroline attempt to gain control over their lives as their AI superior Alex dances the night away. \nAnd on New Earth\, Esta and Isabelle forge hope through a new kind of relationship. \nSpanning across half a century from Melbourne to Mars\, Control is a startling and provocative play by Keziah Warner that delves deep into our relationship with technology: its moral ambiguities\, its dependencies\, and its potential. Control proposes a future where space colonisation meets reality TV; where memories are stored in a government-regulated cloud: where the implementation of AI in education teaches us more about ourselves. This visually striking play confronts audiences with a potential future where humans gradually surrender control of identity\, memory and knowledge-sharing over to technology. \nControl was commissioned by Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre through the INK program and was originally produced by Red Stitch in 2019.\nThis project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia\, its principal arts investment and advisory body.\nThis work is supported by Darebin Arts through the Darebin Arts Speakeasy Spare Room Program

SUMMARY:The Breath of Kings
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare’s Henry 6 plays are one of the great undiscovered gems of Western Literature. An intoxicating mix of violence\, politics and romance\, this civil war is as machiavellian as Succession and as brutal as Game of Thrones. Henry 6 is a rare thing – a religious pacifist in a time of war and his wife the opposite – a ferocious mother willing to destroy an entire country to protect those she loves. But family and country are going to unravel\, and a gleefully malicious Richard of Gloucester is waiting in the wings to take advantage of this chaos. \nThe Breath of Kings is a rare chance to see these plays in all their glory. Burning House will bring their unique blend of ambition and insight to a repertoire season of the Henry 6 plays and Richard 3\, with more adventurous audience members able to watch all plays in a massive five hour long event on weekends. This is theatre at its most ambitious and exciting – and for those of you missing big\, festival epics The Breath of Kings is here to deliver.

SUMMARY:Dying: A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:When the acclaimed author Cory Taylor was diagnosed with a terminal illness\, what followed was an astonishing creative surge that resulted in a memoir Barack Obama named as one of his favourite books of 2017. \nTaylor’s wry insights into the rituals\, language and taboos surrounding mortality can be witty\, provocative or eye-opening – sometimes in the same breath. With honesty and unsentimental clarity she confronts the swamp of anxiety and despair that traditionally surrounds death and opens the door to the bright clear-eyed vision it ultimately grants us. Learning to face death is\, in the end\, learning to live fully. \nEqually moving and hilarious\, Taylor’s last work has been adapted with great care by writer and broadcaster Benjamin Law (Torch the Place)\, a family friend of Taylor’s\, who brings a loving ear to this most intimate tale.

SUMMARY:The Barber of Seville
DESCRIPTION:Opera Australia presents The Barber of Seville at the Regent Theatre\, Melbourne.\nBeyond haircuts and beard trims\, this canny barber is the city’s matchmaking maestro! \nAlmaviva is wealthy\, stealthy and head over heels. Rosina is witty\, pretty and just as smitten. She’s also inconveniently betrothed. They need a plan. Time to call on: Fi-ga-ro! Figaro! Figaro! \nEnter the friendly neighbourhood barber with wits and tricks as sharp as his razors. He sets to work to unite the young lovers in an evening of disguises and duplicity. \nThis rollicking\, laugh-out-loud comedy took a young Rossini just 13 days to write. Playful energy sparkles through as many famous tunes as you can pack into two-and-a-half hours. \nA cast of great voices and high spirits play among a marvellous set of cartoonish proportions — a world inspired by 1920s silent films\, featuring a life-size doll’s house as its centrepiece. \nAustralian Figaros Samuel Dale Johnson and Samuel Dundas lead some of our best comic talents in this side-splitting romp through Seville.

Accidental teacher.\nSchool of Rock The Musical follows slacker musician Dewey Finn as he bluffs his way into a prestigious prep school and turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding\, drum-thumping rock band. \nWith the Battle of the Bands on the line and the school’s uptight principal watching his every move\, Dewey will need more than killer solos to pull it off… he’ll need to stick it to the man… without getting caught.\nWith music by Andrew Lloyd Webber\, lyrics by Glenn Slater\, and a book by Julian Fellowes\, School of Rock – The Musical brings pure rock rebellion to the stage. \nBased on the Paramount movie written by Mike White\, it slams power chords into prep school and turns the volume up on what it means to break the rules\, find your people\, and play with everything you’ve got. This isn’t just school it’s a full-blown anthem for anyone who’s ever felt out of place and turned it into power.

SUMMARY:Bladderwrack
DESCRIPTION:Bladderwrack is exactly the comedy horror science-fiction pantomime pirate show with bits of opera you’ve been waiting for!\nIf it takes place in a small setting\, it’s a big story — so big that it has spilled alarmingly off the stage and into the realm of literature. Now the bolder theatre goer might “enjoy” the dark insights afforded by the BOOK OF THE PLAY. \nIncluding contributions from one of the leading pirate-journalists of the era\, the book features the full script\, copious illustrations\, poetry\, shanties\, a scientific paper\, and several additional stories — all further illuminating the inky world in which you find yourself\, alas!

SUMMARY:Rhinestone Rex & Miss Monica
DESCRIPTION:It’s an age-old question: do opposites attract? More specifically\, could you date someone who had completely different music tastes to you? \nRhinestone Rex and Miss Monica explores this contested idea with oodles of wit and charm through the story of a very unlikely pair. \nIt’s the beginnings of a new friendship between Miss Monica and her contractor Gary. Monica has taken leave from the Sydney Symphony due to tendonitis in her shoulder and decides to employ Gary to install her IKEA-designed decor. \nUnbeknownst to the trained musician\, Gary has an alter ego of Rhinestone Rex\, a washed-up country music star who intends to convince Monica that country music is just as valid as her classical taste. \nBoth single and alone\, a little spark forms between the two\, but are they too dissimilar to match or do opposites attract?

SUMMARY:Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again
DESCRIPTION:Alice Birch’s Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. is a ferocious work of contemporary theatre that refuses to behave. Through sharp\, surreal and darkly funny vignettes\, it twists words into weapons and turns everyday rituals inside out. What begins as an assault on the language and traditions that have shaped “womanhood” becomes something larger: a call to tear down the systems of oppression that divide and diminish us all. \nIn 2025\, we explore this play through an intersectional lens inspired by bell hooks’ insistence that feminism is for everybody—across race\, class and all gender expressions. Our company of artists bring their collective force to the stage\, confronting the very structures we are working and breathing within. Revolt is startling and disarming\, a howl of protest and maybe a map toward possibility: unflinching\, unapologetic and urgently alive. \n“Theatrical exhilaration in civil disobedience.” — The New York Times\nDirected by Emily O’Brien-Brown
