SUMMARY:Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
DESCRIPTION:Edward Albee’s classic slugfest Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf\, at least on the surface\, is an ode to the heartbreak of middle age\, a vicious dissection of a marriage straining under the cumulative rage and disappointments of many years.\nWhen it burst on to the stage in 1962 it tapped into a growing unease about notions of decency and respectability\, with a brutality and sustained menace that tore through the anxieties of the age. The play’s ritualised deconstruction of marriage\, gender\, sexuality and ambition still ring true to this day.\nYet\, Albee’s characters also tell a love story: a story of shared acceptance of an inescapable fate. The inertia and grotesque irony of Martha and George’s romance is served up to their unwitting guests as a taste of the humiliations and the inevitable compromises to come.

SUMMARY:Prisoner at the World's End
DESCRIPTION:Prisoner at the World’s End is a Kafkaesque imagining arising out of the grim and grotesque circumstances of Julian Assange’s imprisonment.\nThe play explores Assange’s predicament through the eyes of three very different women who work in a volunteer café at His Majesty’s Prison Belmarsh. Over the course of their day\, as they work in a small room making sandwiches for inmates and visitors\, they argue if Assange\, the Australian in the High Security Unit is like the man in the parable\, set upon by thieves\, and left abandoned on a roadside until a Good Samaritan finds and helps him.\nBeneath their feet runs a Neolithic pathway. Does violent primitive justice and magical thinking\, still permeate the walls within England’s most notorious prison and justice system?

SUMMARY:Of the Land on Which We Meet
DESCRIPTION:Of the Land on Which We Meet.  What does it mean to be where we are? Opening up the acknowledgement of Country and taking a closer look within it\, Na Djinang circus searches for a way to address the possible lack of connection contemporary Australians have with the spirituality of the land. The performance follows three contemporary Australian circus artists with distinct relationships with Country: an indigenous Australian\, a descendant of migrants and a descendant of colonial settlers. \nOf the Land on Which We Meet hopes to re-discover a connection we once had on Country with 60\,000 years of history\, spirit and story. “ Every day across the continent\, people “acknowledge” country in this place – but what does that really mean? Do these acknowledgements carry serious respect – are they just empty words? How deep is our connection to this country – to its history\, and its First Peoples? What do we really know about this land upon which we meet?”

SUMMARY:The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
DESCRIPTION:An eclectic group of sixth-graders arrives at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee\, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; bold and hyperallergic speller William Barfee uses his “magic foot” to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he’s smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her gay dads. In hilarious\, touching\, and catchy songs\, each speller reveals his/her hopes\, struggles\, and passions as they make their way through the competition. With an engaging\, tuneful score by William Finn and a sweet\, funny book by Rachel Sheinkin\, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee causes audiences to fall in love\, both with the show itself and its “perspicacious\,” “jocular\,” and “effervescent” spellers. A warm hearted musical comedy.

SUMMARY:The Axe in the Ceiling
DESCRIPTION:The Axe in the Ceiling is a story about a newly married couple on a journey of self-discovery\, through a series of absurd events. Chhaya is a playful\, imaginative woman who has always lovingly walked the path that she’s been taught to walk. Hunar is a responsible\, self-reliant man who has always provided well for himself and made Good Decisions. Their relationship begins with an axe in the ceiling\, and peaks with a bird net in a corn field. Their journey together rocks their individual stability and reveals gaps in their self-image\, compelling them to reflect on what they truly want and whether they have what it takes to get it. The Axe in the Ceiling is a story of vulnerability\, human connection\, villain-less antagonism\, resilience\, and rising from the ashes. It is performed in waves of absurdity\, realism\, comedy\, romance\, and philosophical reflection. This production provokes deep thought and holds up a mirror to our own relationships\, but is ultimately a show that offers hope and validates our individual experiences in the world. Adapted from a household tale by the Brothers Grimm.
