SUMMARY:Peter and The Starcatcher Brisbane
DESCRIPTION:Peter and The Starcatcher Brisbane reveals the UNTOLD STORY OF NEVERLAND. \nThis Broadway sensation\, a New York Times Critic’s Pick and winner of five Tony Awards®\, will enchant Australia in 2024-2025. The production stars Colin Lane (Lano & Woodley)\, Alison Whyte (Frontline)\, Paul Capsis (La Cage Aux Folles)\, Olivia Deeble (Home and Away)\, and Otis Dhanji (Aquaman). \nOriginally developed by Disney Theatrical Group and written by Rick Elice (Jersey Boys).   The play is based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. The script is by Rick Elice and music by Wayne Barker.  The production merges imaginative storytelling with whimsical music\, creating a captivating theatrical experience. \nThe narrative follows a young orphan\, simply called Boy.  He meets Molly\, a determined girl on a mission to protect a trunk of magical “starstuff” from the villainous pirate\, Black Stache. Their journey together unfolds themes of friendship\, bravery\, and identity.  The story culminates in Boy’s transformation finally into Peter Pan. \nRenowned for its inventive stagecraft\, the play uses minimalistic props and also the physicality of its actors to bring fantastical elements to life. This innovative approach\, combined with a witty and poignant script\, has made Peter and the Starcatcher a favourite among audiences.  The show has earned multiple Tony Awards and critical acclaim for its creativity and heart. \nPeter and The Starcatcher Brisbane opens 14 March\, 2025. \nTour Dates\nCanberra 15 Oct – 3 Nov\nMelbourne 8-30 Nov\nAdelaide 9 Jan – 25 Jan 2025\nSydney 31 Jan- 16 Feb\nBrisbane 14 Mar- 6 Apr 2025

SUMMARY:An Audience with Don Dunstan
DESCRIPTION:The play is\, as the title suggests\, an audience with ‘Don Dunstan‘ the former Labor Premier of South Australia. \nIt recounts his political life through drama\, poetry and song. Set late at night in an Adelaide cabaret\, only Don and a young Black African singer/actor\, who aspires to be like Billy Holiday and Nina Simone\, remain. \nFull of theatricality\, befitting the former Premier\, it recalls his appearance in court opposing capital punishment\, his opposition to the Vietnam War\, the Royal Commission into the sacking of a Police Commissioner\, and the day as the premier he wore pink shorts to parliament. \nThe play moves in and out of the cabaret setting as it tells the story of Don Dunstan ‘s political life\, one of Australia’s most charismatic\, courageous and visionary politicians. \nPresented by Neil Cole

SUMMARY:RBG: Of Many\, One
DESCRIPTION:“One of the all-time great performances” The Sydney Morning Herald \nAfter a triumphant premiere season in 2022\, and a sold-out national tour in 2024\, the smash-hit RBG: Of Many\, One returns to the Melbourne stage once more in 2025\, due to popular demand. \nThe brilliant Heather Mitchell will be reviving her award-winning and critically acclaimed “virtuosic performance” (The Conversation) of the woman who changed the face of the American legal system: the indomitable Ruth Bader Ginsburg. \nThe second woman to be appointed to the US Supreme Court\, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was both a trailblazer in the American judiciary and a fierce advocate for gender equality and reproductive rights. Her life is brought to the stage in an STC commissioned play by the extraordinary pen of Olivier Award-winning Australian playwright and expert legal mind\, Suzie Miller (Prima Facie). This story chronicles Ginsburg’s wins and dissents\, traces her steps forward and the steps back\, and brings you right into the room with Ruth at the most pivotal moments of her life. \nA masterstroke of directorial vision\, Priscilla Jackman reconjures RBG in this once-in-a-generation theatrical event that continues to find resonances with the political landscape of the present day. If you haven’t seen it yet\, now is your chance to witness the sensation that is “magnificent from start to finish” (Limelight).

SUMMARY:The Removalists
DESCRIPTION:David Williamson’s The Removalists is still as provocative and relevant as it was at its debut. \nWhen The Removalists premiered at Melbourne’s La Mama Theatre in 1971 it put a wrecking ball through the walls of genteel Australian theatre. Profane\, honest and arresting in its depiction of the animal side of humanity\, its most surprising revelation is in how little has changed. \nSet in an inner-suburb of Melbourne\, Fiona and Kate report an act of violence to the police hoping things will be resolved peacefully. However\, the local constabulary like to handle things their own way. Over the course of one evening the hidden currents of competition\, desire and brutality flowing beneath polite society will be dragged out into the open. \nAnne-Louise Sarks directs the bracing revival of this dark satire in a production that sets its gaze on Australia – right here\, right now – and refuses to blink. \nMelbourne Theatre Company celebrates the ongoing legacy of La Mama Theatre’s bold\, unflinching contributions to the independent theatre scene by contributing $5 from the sale of each on-stage ticket during our 2025 season of The Removalists.

SUMMARY:Pain Drunk
DESCRIPTION:Luca\, a free-spirited artist\, and Colette\, a pragmatic but restless Phd student and tutor\, collide in a whirlwind romance. Their attraction is instantaneous\, igniting a passionate relationship filled with creativity\, laughter\, and intense connection. Yet\, as their lives intertwine\, the very qualities that draw them together also drive them apart. \nOver the course of two years\, the stage transforms from their euphoric first encounters to the chaos of shared living. As Luca’s spontaneity and inability to communicate clashes with Colette’s desire for stability and closed off nature\, their differences unravel into fiery arguments\, confrontations\, and moments of tender vulnerability. Each scene explores the push and pull of their love—a dance between longing and frustration\, desire and disappointment. \nDespite their struggles\, they remain inexplicably bound to each other\, grappling with the realisation that while they are not meant to be\, the pull of their connection is impossible to ignore. As they confront their fears and insecurities\, they must decide whether to embrace the tumult or seek the solace of separation.

SUMMARY:Goldfish
DESCRIPTION:Reality and fantasy collide in Goldfish. It’s a dynamic\, inventive performance — a game of eye spy on stage\, where everyday items are transformed through the communal magic of suspended disbelief. \nA solo puppeteer spins a fable for children. We hear a story of people who get rid of time: no night\, no day. This creates a flood\, devastating the land. But when two disaster recovery workers suddenly burst into the theatre\, fiction becomes fact and a new story demands to be told. \nGoldfish is a ground-breaking collaboration between celebrated Tasmanian puppetry company Terrapin and Japan’s Aichi Prefectural Art Theater\, with performers from Australia and Japan. The show does not travel with a set. Instead\, a new set is made for each season using the materials of disaster recovery unique to each place. These materials are then donated to key organisations working in disaster management.

SUMMARY:Fresno
DESCRIPTION:Fresno is an exciting\, fresh Australian work written by Josh Connell\, Jeremy Harland and James Greaves. Best described as a ‘Cheers! Musical written in the style of Come From Away’. \nFresno sets itself in a traditional Irish-American bar\, that explores the life of a young bartender named JJ\, and the network of friends\, bar regulars and found family that surround him. \nIt also tackles many issues faced by young people in society today such as: the cost of living crisis; alcoholism; and the affects of gentrification. It is based in Fresno\, California but written with a distinctly Australian humour which undercuts the idealisations of the American Dream and reinforces the Aussie love for an underdog. \nThe music ‘has been written with a classic musical theatre feel\, reminiscent of old school story driver songs rather than the clunky interludes shoehorned in that do little for the narrative’. \nAfter a resounding success for it’s ‘In Concert’ development showing at The Butterfly Club in March 2024\, Fresno is having its official debut at Chapel Off Chapel in February 2025. \nPresented by J.M Harland & J. R Connell

SUMMARY:Nijinsky
DESCRIPTION:Vaslav Nijinsky reached the peak of his career in the early 20th century\, captivating audiences with his unmatched performances. His expressive and sensual choreography thrilled some and shocked others\, even inciting riots in Parisian theatres. \nTragically\, Nijinsky’s brilliance was overshadowed by his battle with schizophrenia\, leading him to spend much of his later life in treatment facilities. His final public performance in 1919\, held in a Swiss hotel\, was a haunting expression of his turbulent emotions. \nRenowned narrative ballet choreographer John Neumeier delves into Nijinsky’s final moments on stage\, vividly tracing the journey of a genius—from his rise to fame to his personal struggles. The production explores his complex family life\, doomed relationships\, and the unforgettable performances that cemented his legacy. \nBlurring the lines between biography and spectacle\, Nijinsky provides The Australian Ballet’s male dancers with the opportunity to embody his distinctive style. Set against the dazzling backdrop of early 20th-century Paris\, the production’s lavish sets and costumes transport audiences into a world of artistic brilliance. \nA breathtaking theatrical experience\, Nijinsky is a powerful homage to the dancer and choreographer who forever transformed the world of ballet. \nTouring\nMelbourne 21 Feb – 1 March 2025 Reagent Theatre\nSydney 2-22 April 2025. SUMMARY:Never Have I Ever
DESCRIPTION:A night to remember? More like a nightmare best left behind. \nA modern take on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\, this savagely funny Australian premiere comes from the host of The Guilty Feminist podcast and features a powerhouse cast\, including Chika Ikogwe (Heartbreak High)\, Simon Gleeson (Les Misérables)\, Katie Robertson (Five Bedrooms)\, and Sunny S Walia (Shantaram). \nTwo couples gather for a final meal to mark the end of their failed restaurant venture\, but as the wine flows\, so do the long-buried secrets. Fueled by top-shelf alcohol and years of simmering tension\, a seemingly harmless drinking game reveals the power struggles\, resentments\, and fears lurking beneath their friendships. And that’s just the beginning. \nBeneath the laughter\, flirtation\, and casual banter lies a bubbling mix of money\, sex\, race\, and class—served up with biting wit. Never Have I Ever is sharp\, shocking\, and a testament to just how volatile personal politics can be.
