SUMMARY:Never Have I Ever
DESCRIPTION:A night to remember? More like a nightmare best left behind. \nA modern take on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\, this savagely funny Australian premiere comes from the host of The Guilty Feminist podcast and features a powerhouse cast\, including Chika Ikogwe (Heartbreak High)\, Simon Gleeson (Les Misérables)\, Katie Robertson (Five Bedrooms)\, and Sunny S Walia (Shantaram). \nTwo couples gather for a final meal to mark the end of their failed restaurant venture\, but as the wine flows\, so do the long-buried secrets. Fueled by top-shelf alcohol and years of simmering tension\, a seemingly harmless drinking game reveals the power struggles\, resentments\, and fears lurking beneath their friendships. And that’s just the beginning. \nBeneath the laughter\, flirtation\, and casual banter lies a bubbling mix of money\, sex\, race\, and class—served up with biting wit. Never Have I Ever is sharp\, shocking\, and a testament to just how volatile personal politics can be.

SUMMARY:Fledermaus!
DESCRIPTION:Fledermaus! is a story of revenge\, infidelity\, disguises\, and imprisonment decorated by Strauss’s splendid waltzes. With its glorious music\, wonderful singing\, and a charming and witty libretto\, GSOV offers two opportunities to see this joyful work of genius. The first is in the beautiful shady garden setting of The Knowe\, an historic cottage in Sassafras. Tickets are strictly limited and this summer presentation always sells out quickly. The second is the recently refurbished\, The Round Studio. \nA Viennese gentleman\, Gabriel von Eisenstein\, who should be heading to prison for whacking a policeman and calling him a “dummkof”\, ends up going to a grand party at the villa of the Russian Prince Orlovsky! \nHowever\, von Eisenstein has been lured into a trap concocted by Dr Falke\, his once rival for the heart of Rosalinda. Meanwhile\, believing her husband von Eisenstein is imprisoned\, Rosalinda has agreed to Dr Falke’s invitation to attend the same party disguised as an Hungarian Countess! Falke’s aim is simple: revenge and to enjoy von Eisenstein’s embarrassment. \nBut it seems that even further mischief is afoot as Adele\, the von Eisenstein’s maid\, also attends the party in Rosalinda’s best dress! Inevitably\, too much champagne is consumed resulting in a hilarious mixture of disguises and wrongdoings. However\, through the splendid magic of operetta\, all ends happily! \nFledermaus! will be presented in costume with accompaniment from a quartet of players in the delightful garden of the historical The Knowe\, Sassafras\, as well as the Studio at The Round.

SUMMARY:Follies
DESCRIPTION:In a run-down theatre scheduled for demolition\, former chorus girls reunite to honour their performances there during the interwar years. The theatre is ramshackle and the harshness of age has tarnished the rosy tint of their nostalgia. But as the women remember those glamorous years\, the faded theatre is propelled back through time and transforms into its former grandeur. Sparkling ghosts of their youth perform old numbers\, and the women’s unfinished business soon becomes clear. \nJoin us as we enter Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s world of 1971 Broadway and experience the iconic\, rallying cry of “I’m still here!” filling St Kilda’s Palais Theatre. Sondheim’s score is a loving tribute to show music from the 1920s\, ‘30s and ‘40s\, while also turning old ideas about musical theatre on its head. \nThis performance features both Australian musical theatre royalty and emerging stars\, with Tony Award-Winning designer Roger Kirk creating the exquisite set and costumes.

SUMMARY:Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:The Macbeths are back with their unparalleled thirst for the ultimate power of the throne. \n“Their passion for each other is absolute in every way\, as much metaphysical as erotic. The lust for power fuses with mutual desire and enhances the turbulence.” \nA stunning mix of mind games and manipulation\, sparked by the prophesies of three witches that Macbeth encounters on the heath as he returns from war\, triggers his burning ambition which in turn ignites an inferno in his wife to inspire him to kill for the crown. \nInvading armies\, blood\, dark magic\, sabotage\, power\, storms and ghosts of our pasts. Take all the spirits of those who have strived for power and relentlessly fought for control. This is the story of Macbeth. \n‍“Macbeth\, accusing himself of poor malice or inadequate slaughter\, rouses himself to an apocalyptic ambition to tear apart the universe itself\, destroying this world and the world to come.” \n‍

SUMMARY:37 by Nathan Maynard
DESCRIPTION:Lace up your boots! Whether you’re a footy fanatic or not\, the Cutting Cove boys are back. \nThe laugh-out-loud hit of Melbourne Theatre Company’s Season 2024 returns after winning the hearts of critics and audiences alike. \nThe local footy team of this small coastal town has spent too long at the bottom of the ladder. But then a new hope arrives: the Marngrook cousins. Named after the Aboriginal game that inspired AFL\, they’re match-fit to bring home the team’s first flag in forever. 37 juxtaposes choreographed sequences of Marngrook and the modern game with the hilarity and at-times questionable banter found within sporting clubs around Australia. \nSet within the era of Adam Goodes’s war cry – and named for the number he immortalised – 37 asks ten actors to throw themselves into this world of blood and grit to get at the values that drive a national obsession. Community\, identity\, the price of winning and the meaning of a goal: they’re all up for grabs. \nPenned by Nathan Maynard – twice named Tasmanian Aboriginal Artist of the Year – and directed by Isaac Drandic (The Birthday Party\, ABC’s Cleverman)\, 37 is a reminder that honest conversations are more than a ball toss. It matters where you stand.
