About the Show

One Act Wonders! In its final production for 2025, Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria offers a rare opportunity to discover a collection of four neglected one-act plays from master librettist, W.S Gilbert across one evening’s entertainment (and two weekend matinees).

Mostly remembered today for his famous collaboration with Arthur Sullivan, as a young barrister Gilbert found himself waiting for all too infrequent briefs and he turned to writing. Testament to his talent, soon after, he was earning his living as a playwright and librettist. Gilbert continued to write plays throughout his busy creative life with his last, The Hooligan, completed only four months before he died.

This collection demonstrates Gilbert’s wide-ranging interests and styles over 40 years and, over 100 years after their creation, hold the stage well today. Directed by a new generation, come and enjoy:

Comedy and Tragedy – Directed by Ben Klein. An actress finds a deadly solution to her tricky romantic situation. A masterpiece of dramatic irony;
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern – Directed by Sarah Berry. In a reimagined parody of Shakespeare’s hugely popular ‘Hamlet’, Rosencrantz and Ophelia scheme to get rid of Hamlet so they can be together;
Creatures of Impulse – Directed by Danielle Zuccala. A fairy toys with guests at an inn for her own devious pleasure. Pure slapstick fun, and
The Hooligan – Directed by Naomi Tooby. A condemned man pleads for justice. A sophisticated character study.
