About the Show
Recollection sees Olivia, a mother, trying to piece together her late teenage daughter’s life through a perfume.
In the recent past, Molly, a teenage girl, falls in love with Jenna, a new friend at school. Molly’s mother, Olivia, is concerned about Jenna’s insensitivity and self-destructive behavior. Despite these concerns, the relationship between the two girls flourishes in secret.
In the present, Molly has passed away unexpectedly. Leaving Olivia to reconstruct her life and remember her by creating a perfume that captures her scent. Olivia must confront the true essence of her daughter and who she was becoming, integrating Jenna as an intrinsic part of Molly’s life.
Recollection is directed by Cathy Hunt (‘What Every Girl Should Know’, Brunswick Mechanics). This innovative queer work provides a sensory experience for audiences, using scent to convey themes of grief, decay, and growth. The project is supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants, the University of Melbourne Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, and Ms. Beck Wilkinson, with creative development support from Next Wave.
