About the Show
Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre proudly presents the Australian premiere of Romeo and Julie, a modern and comedic love story by acclaimed Welsh playwright Gary Owen. Directed by the award-winning Kamarra Bell-Wykes.
About the Play:
Romeo and Julie garnered 5-star reviews during its successful run at the National Theatre and Sherman Theatre in the UK. Despite its familiar-sounding title, this play tells a fresh story about Romeo, a single dad, and Julie, a young woman determined to study physics at university. Though they grew up only a few streets apart, Romeo and Julie come from vastly different worlds. As they collide into first love, they face a pivotal crossroads in their lives, with Julie’s family fearing the worst in a world of unequal opportunities.
This sweet and savage love story explores the tension between sacrifice and the pursuit of personal dreams.
Cast and Crew:
Lead Actors: Shontane Farmer and Damon Baudin, graduates of the 2023 Hansen Graduate program at Red Stitch
Supporting Cast: Claudia Greenstone, Justin Hosking, and Belinda McClory
Director: Kamarra Bell-Wykes, an award-winning director with honors including the Kate Challis RAKA Award and the Patrick White Playwrights Award
About the Playwright:
Gary Owen, celebrated for his play Iphigenia in Splott, has a distinguished portfolio. His play Killology won Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre at the 2018 Olivier Awards. And his show Violence and Son was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2016. Iphigenia in Splott received the Best New Play award at the UK Theatre Awards in 2015 and was listed as one of The Guardian’s 50 best theatre shows of the 21st century. Later this year, Iphigenia in Splott will return to Red Stitch by popular demand.
