Full House for Avenue Q Opening

On Saturday, February 22, 2025, the National Theatre in St Kilda buzzed with excitement as it hosted the opening night of the Tony Award-winning musical, Avenue Q. This puppet-filled, adults-only comedy, renowned for its sharp wit and heartfelt storytelling, captivated the audience from the first note to the final curtain call.

The production, presented by AG Theatre, follows the journey of Princeton, a recent college graduate who moves into a modest New York apartment on Avenue Q. There, he encounters a diverse group of residents, each grappling with their own challenges and aspirations. Together, they navigate the complexities of adulthood, seeking purpose and connection in the bustling city.

On stage is a group of emerging performers, demonstrating the depth of talent in Melbourne’s theatre scene. They sing, dance, act, and animate puppets with precision, expression, and energy, supported by a live band that brings every moment to life.

The creative team behind Avenue Q includes director Pip Mushin, musical director Alexandra Byrne, and choreographer Adriana Pannuzzo. Their collaborative efforts resulted in a seamless blend of engaging musical numbers, dynamic choreography, and compelling storytelling. The production design by Abbey Stanway, complemented by Karen Spencer’s costumes and Andrew McDougall’s expertly crafted puppets, transported the audience into the quirky world of Avenue Q.
