Forget Glastonbury, Coachella is for suckers – Eurovision: On Tour at the Palais Theatre was unexpectedly the hottest ticket in town this Friday night.
The whole night felt like a glorious, technicolour fever dream, just like the actual Eurovision televised competition. It had everything – singalongs, outrageous costumes, enough glitter to blind a magpie, and enough energy to power a small village.
Now, I wouldn’t call myself a Eurovision die-hard, however, after this? I’m practically waving the douze points paddle in the air! This concert’s a brilliant time for for everyone, whether you’re a lifelong fan or just there for the crazy costumes. The Palais was electric with energy, and even Baby Faye (my fellow reviewer who’s all of four months old now) gave it the thumbs up (all those flashing lights kept her well entertained!).
Our hosts, Soraya and Senhit, were absolute gems. Proper down-to-earth and funny, they had the whole crowd belting out “Aussie Oi Oi!” within the first few minutes. They kept the chats flowing throughout, making everyone feel like part of the Eurovision family.
Speaking of family, the die-hard fans were out in force, belting out every lyric like they were competing themselves. The reaction from the room was a true testament to Australia’s Eurovision obsession! There was a bit of a mosh pit forming during some numbers, and let’s just say, Eurovision drinking games were definitely in full swing (classy, I know!).
The show was a visual feast – slick choreography, impressive projections and a lighting set up that could rival a disco ball convention.
Would it really be Eurovision if we didn’t touch on the costumes? From dazzling gowns to gloriously quirky get-ups, there wasn’t a boring outfit in sight.
Honourable mention to Destiny from Malta a few songs in who got the party started with a bang, belting out a tune and encouraging everyone to get on their feet. From then it was a nonstop dance party.
Our own Dami Im absolutely stole the show, belting out those high notes like nobody’s business. I, for one, was blown away by the talent on display – these Eurovision peeps can SANG! Another honourable mention to The Roop who absolutely sent the crowd into a frenzy at the end, with the whole Palais practically levitating with excitement.
For many of artists it was their first time Down Under, and they were lapping up the Aussie love.
Sydney, listen up! Don’t walk, RUN to grab your tickets for this Sunday the 17th of November before they’re gone! (Details at https://www.eurovisionontour.tv/). Trust me, you won’t regret it!
