Fairytalers

Meat Market Stables

Ellis Austin Finnie

Forget everything you thought you knew about the origins of fairy tales. In the stunning new play Fairytalers, we meet Catherine D’Aulnoy, Henriette de Murat, Charlotte Rose de Caumont de La Force, and Marie L’Heritier—four pioneering women who wrote these classic stories long before the Brothers Grimm ever did. They’re rightfully angry that their legacy has bee n erased, and their fight to reclaim it is a riveting spectacle.

Through a series of arguments, tears, and witty reenactments, we witness their trials and tribulations firsthand. The cast—Emily Farrell, Janine Kwok, Olivia Morison, and Daisy Valerio—are magnificent. They bring such a nuanced depth to their roles that you can’t help but feel their frustration and champion their cause. Their performances anchor this emotionally charged play, ensuring the audience feels the weight of their stolen contributions.

This show is reminiscent of the empowering spirit of the musical SIX, celebrating women who fought for their place in a world that sought to silence them. It’s a powerful and entertaining experience, enhanced by a minimalist stage, thoughtful lighting, and an immersive sound design that all work together to tell their story.

(A quick heads-up: This show is recommended for ages 13 and up.)
