Windmill Theatre Company has struck gold with their dazzling production of Mamma Mia! now lighting up Bunjil Place in Narre Warren until June 21. Bursting with heart, humour, and hit after ABBA-fuelled hit, this vibrant staging is a joyful celebration of love, family, and finding yourself.
From the moment you step into the theatre, the audience is transported to sunny Greece, thanks to Craig Wiltshire’s stunning set design. Paired with the colourful, dazzling costumes by Katelyn Anitema and Nicole Facey.
Rising star Emilie Toby shines as the leading Sophie Sheridan, delivering a performance filled with charm, power, and emotional depth. From her very first moment on stage, Toby wins over the audience with a magnetic presence and powerhouse vocals.
Stephanie Powell is equally captivating as the iconic Donna Sheridan. Her heartfelt rendition of ‘The Winner takes it all” is a genuine showstopper — emotional, raw, and vocally stunning. Together, Toby and Powell bring real warmth and authenticity to the mother-daughter relationship at the heart of the show.
The trio of dads – SeanVan Geyzel as Sam Carmichael, Danny Ginsberg as Bill Austin, and Leigh Roncon as Harry Bright – bring humour and heart to their roles. Roncon’s quirky, endearing take on Harry is a standout, with his ‘spontaneity’ leaving the audience grinning from ear to ear.
Choreographer Guada Bañez keeps the energy sky-high with sharp choreography that perfectly captures Mamma Mia’s iconic vibe. One of the night’s highlights is “Lay All Your Love on Me” – Mackinnley Bowden (Sky) and the ensemble had the audience in stitches, with a performance which captured the chaos and humour of the iconic scene we all know and love.
This cast is full of gems. Liz Catford brings brilliant comedic timing as the vivacious Rosie, while Carly Daley’s Tanya oozes glam and attitude in all the right ways. Mitchell Smith is simply stunning, delivering a unique take on Ali that brought something delightfully new and fresh to the role.
David Barrell’s musical direction was spot on, leading a band and ensemble that infuses every number with party-like energy. The sound is crisp, the harmonies are rich, and ABBA’s music has never sounded better.
But perhaps the unsung hero of the production is Andrew Davies’ lighting design. From the start of the overture to the electrifying megamix finale, the lighting elevates every scene and moment with creativity and flair.
Under Katelyn Anitema’s slick and thoughtful direction, this production is more than just a jukebox musical — it’s a high-energy, heartwarming escape that delivers big laughs, bigger voices, and a whole lot of love. And with a strong, cohesive ensemble, there’s not a weak link in sight.
If you’re after a feel-good night at the theatre with stunning performances and plenty of sparkle, get yourself to Bunjil Place before June 21. Windmill Theatre Company has put on a show that’s as infectious and unforgettable as ABBA themselves.
