What an epic evening!

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has collaborated with Marvel Studios to create a phenomenal Infinity Saga Concert Experience like no other.  And if you are a fan of the super, a fan of live music, or just want to be incredibly entertained you absolutely will be!

As the strings warm up excitedly and the orchestra sends out some resonating tones in tuning, there’s an adrenaline rush knowing the evening is coming to life.  The mastermind of it all, conductor Nicholas Bus enters with applause echoing up into the roof.  Avengers assemble! The energy immediately floods across you.  Your heart races in familiarity to the iconic opening that the MSO offers it’s delighted audience.

To start, Ironman’s transformation flashes across the big screen. The cellos and double bass plays are all holding the tempo that beats together as Tony Stark’s heart lifts up into the sky, and it drives us through his journey.  The brass kicks in to give us depth, the percussion puts us at the edge of the seat and the woodwinds add the timbre as Nicholas Bus “Handles [the score] like a dream.”

Then we head in to Captain America’s world, as the violins bow together creating an echo of the experiment taking place. The blue serum reflects off the low lit orchestra players, as Steven Rogers cries out “I can do this!” and the MSO heighten their speed of their perfection in music and we watch Captain America’s first barefoot chase.

When Thor enters, there’s a wave of happiness tha fills the hall as he celebrates when swearing to guard the nine realms.  He explains that in the place he comes from, magic and science are one adn the same.  But tonight, the magic of film, and the live performance unites absolute beauty.  This experience is electric and magnificent in every way.

As the Avenger scenes roll on, the orchestra stroke with the punches, raising their choice of instrumental weapons in time with the battle scenes.  Thor and Ironman use strength after strength, whilst the MSO in unison and fixed concentration bring the story into our world.  The epic battle with Loki is so well timed musically, and as Hawkeye’s arrows fly through the clouds, the flautist melodies grace the atmosphere created.

Dr Strange appears with the strings all strong in pizzicato, then we meet Antman and the webs of Spiderman.  The orchestra uses crisp pauses so that the breaks in music are sharp, and the tones are all driving with powerful execution.  A true musical superpower alight.

After intermission, the timpani, followed by the trumpets vibrate the beats across the audience and we are back to be “Hooked on a feeling” as we hit the uplifting energy of The Guardians of the Galaxy.  You feel every emotion as we hit the End Game and the audience is so entranced, applauding in comradery at the heroic moments.

Highlights of the evening include seeing the orchestra members smile as they played, the percussion players moving to their shakers and the music, the increased energy before the cymbals clashed and the excitement between looking at the MSO performers and the screen.  There is a sense of hearing the instruments more when you are watching them being played.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga Concert Experience bring melodies that surge into the night, bringing the tales to our city with an incredibly lift that makes you feel like you have been a part of the superheroes journey.

As conductor Nicholas Bus explained, it’s a “symphonic love letter” mixed with an incredible cinematographic journey.  You experience “I love you 3000” in every note, stroke and moment.
