Returning to the Butterfly Club for another Melbourne International Comedy Festival show, I was intrigued by the promise of music, singing, and dancing. “Op-Shop!” delivered a charming and unexpectedly heartwarming experience.
The show opens with a vibrant introduction to five distinct characters, each drawn to a Ballarat op-shop for unique reasons. We meet the relatable weekend worker, whose thoughts are perpetual with her dogs; Scarlett, the seasoned op-shop aficionado in pursuit of the elusive “perfect fit”; Vinnie, the teapot collector perhaps searching for more than just porcelain (could love be in the air in the op-shop?); Savannah, the anxiety-ridden graduate desperately seeking the perfect outfit; and Sal, yearning for a wardrobe upgrade beyond the mundane tie.
These characters’ stories intertwine seamlessly, creating a delightful narrative of support and self-discovery within the quirky confines of the op-shop. The show thoughtfully touches on themes of sustainability, anxiety, and the pitfalls of fast fashion, adding depth to its lighthearted premise.
Remarkably, within its hour-long runtime, “Op-Shop!” features 12 original songs. From the infectious opening number, “Gotta find it first,” to the poignant ballad “Can You Help Me,” and my personal highlight, the whimsical “Love in the Footwear Aisle on a Tuesday at 2:34,” the music is consistently engaging. The live band elevates the performance, bringing Victoria Angelique Mertzanidis’s catchy tunes to life with energy and flair.
Mertzanidis’s writing and direction shine, creating a believable op-shop atmosphere with minimalist staging that captures the charm of hidden corners and unexpected finds. The cast, perfectly chosen for their roles, deliver compelling performances that resonate with authenticity.
“Op-Shop!” is a hidden gem, much like the treasures found within its setting. While perhaps a little “rough around the edges” in its low-fi production, its charm and heart is undeniable. It’s a delightful bargain of entertainment, leaving you with a warm feeling and a smile.
