I had the privilege to attend the opening night of CLOCs adaptation of Catch Me If You Can The musical at The National Theatre, St Kilda. Although this was my first time attending this theatre I hope it won’t be my last. The theatre was built in 1921 and still to this day holds such history for Australian artists, the theatre is much more than just a theatre, it also operates as a drama, ballet and opera school.
Catch Me If You Can follows the semi-autobiographical story of the incomparable con artist Frank Abagnale Jr on his journey impersonating a Pan am pilot, a doctor, a teacher and an attorney. The book was originally published in 1980 and then later adapted into a film in 2002 staring Leonardo DiCaprio as the leading man and directed by Steven Spielberg.
CLOCs stage adaptation captivated the audience from start to finish from high kicking choreography to belting high notes and 60s themed costumes. The cast is made up of multi talented performers in a wide range of skills on and off the stage. Overall stand outs for me during the show include Will Woods (Frank Abagnale Jr) Tony Burge (Carl Hanratty) and Tyler-Rose Shattock (Cheryl Ann, Jane, Nurse 4) each performer showcased powerful vocal ranges and strong execution of stage presence, however one person who brought the house down for her tear jerking performance was India Morris (Brenda Strong, Ensemble).
The creative team just to name a few involved include Richard Perdriau (Director/Set Designer) Tony Toppi (Musical Director) Felicity Bender (Choreographer) Victoria Horne (Costume Designer) and the entire production team have put in meticulous preparation creating a show you can’t keep your eyes off the stage. Each scene was equally matched with outstanding choreography and magnificent 60s inspired costumes thanks to the wonderfully talented Felicity Bender (Choreographer) and Victoria Horne (Costume Designer). The entire cast of Catch Me If You Can executed every dance number with great precision, skill, energy and passion and all their hard work and dedication has paid off. This show has a great balance between impeccable comedic timing, and dramatic storytelling.
