The Windmill Theatre Company presents “School of Rock,” a side-splitting new musical inspired by the hit film. Follow the misadventures of Dewey Finn, a down-and-out rocker who concocts a scheme to make some quick cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. Instead of sticking to the curriculum, he turns his straight-A students into a high-energy rock band. In the process of teaching these young prodigies the true spirit of rock, Dewey also wins over the school’s beautiful but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover her wild side. Featuring 14 new songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber along with all the iconic hits from the movie, this high-voltage production combines searing guitar riffs and heartwarming romance into an unforgettable experience!

Daragh Wills takes on the role of Dewey Finn with electrifying energy and charisma, channeling the spirit of Jack Black’s iconic performance. They capture the essence of Dewey’s rebellious and lovable personality, infusing his portrayal with the same humour and charm that made Jack Black’s character so memorable. The dynamic stage presence and comedic timing brings a fresh yet familiar feel to the role, delivering Dewey’s antics and rock ‘n’ roll passion with authenticity and flair. His interactions with the young cast are both hilarious and heartfelt, creating a believable and endearing bond that drives the show’s emotional core.

With spot-on vocal performances and guitar-shredding skills, Daragh Wills embodies the larger-than-life character of Dewey Finn, paying homage to Jack Black while making the role uniquely his own. His performance is a standout, leaving audiences both laughing and cheering in this high-octane, rock-infused musical.

Complementing Daragh Wills’s standout performance is an astonishing cast of young talent, whose musical prowess and stage presence are nothing short of remarkable. These pint-sized prodigies deliver jaw-dropping performances, playing their instruments live and capturing the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll with impressive skill and enthusiasm. Their chemistry is palpable, bringing to life the heartwarming and hilarious transformation from straight-A students to a powerhouse rock band.

Nicole Kapiniaris Anson’s performance as Principal Mullins was a comedic tour de force. Her portrayal was characterised by impeccable timing, nuanced expressions, and a commanding stage presence that captivated the audience from start to finish. She expertly captured the essence of Principal Mullins, blending authority with moments of vulnerability and humour. Her delivery of witty lines and reactions to the chaos unfolding around her on stage were both hilarious and endearing, earning her well-deserved laughs and applause.

The cast showed remarkable professionalism when confronted with technical difficulties as their microphones were cutting in and out. Their ability to maintain composure and deliver strong performances under such circumstances highlights their dedication and talent, ensuring the audience enjoyed a seamless and engaging theatrical experience.

The sets were not just visually appealing but also ingeniously used to enhance the storytelling and immerse the audience in the world of the show. The attention to detail in the set design was evident, from the classroom scenes to the vibrant and dynamic rock concert setups.

What really stood out was how the stage was ingeniously utilised throughout the production. The transition between scenes was done with ease thanks to the versatile set pieces and clever stage management. For example, the classroom scenes felt authentic and immersive, with desks, chalkboards, and other school props adding to the atmosphere.

During the rock concert sequences, the stage came alive with dynamic lighting, platforms, and well-coordinated choreography. This not only captured the essence of the rock ‘n’ roll spirit but also allowed the actors to showcase their talents in an electrifying manner.

As the final curtains drew to a close, the cast took their bows amidst thunderous applause from the audience. The standing ovation was a testament to the incredible talent, hard work, and dedication displayed by the performers, musicians, and crew throughout the production.
