News: Urinetown (Soundworks)

Chapel Off Chapel
28 October to 6 November 2022

Check out the latest on what’s on stage in Melbourne here.

In a post-apocalyptic town, somewhere in the Australian Outback, a revolution is brewing. All the water has dried up. Any that’s left in the reservoirs is controlled by the Urine Good Company (UGC), which rations it out to the public as it sees fit. The townsfolk must use public amenities and must pay to do so. Anyone caught relieving themselves outside a public amenity is shipped off to Urinetown… never to return again.

As the water shortage worsens, the UGC hikes up the fees for use of the public toilets. The working class rise up in protest, led by Bobby Strong.

Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of the world’s favourite art forms.

Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

Heroes, Villains, Global Warming, Class Inequality, Rich Folk, Poor Folk, Greed, Corrupt Police, Unfair Government, Dystopian Lifestyles, Musical Parodies, Theatre Tropes … …. and a generous serving of toilet humour…

Anyone who has endured Melbourne’s COVID lockdowns will relate with 99.37% of this show.
