Theatrical Brings “The Boy From Oz” to Melbourne’s National Theatre

Prolific independent musical theatre company Theatrical is set to present the Tony and Helpmann Award-winning Australian musical, The Boy From Oz, at the National Theatre Melbourne from July 6-21.

Starring acclaimed Peter Allen tribute artist Matthew Hadcraft, this production promises to capture the infectious energy and charm of one of Australia’s most beloved entertainers. Hadcraft, who has been performing his Peter Allen show across Australia since 2015, expressed his excitement about the role. “Peter Allen’s energy, love for his audiences, and sense of fun are captivating even decades after his death. He’s a true Australian icon, and I feel very lucky to play him and perform his legendary songs,” he said.

The musical is set to premiere just ahead of Pride Month, adding an extra layer of significance. Hadcraft, who identifies as gay, highlighted the subtle way Peter Allen’s coming out journey is reflected in his music. “Peter came out as bisexual, and you can hear his journey through the lyrics of his songs. In ‘I Honestly Love You,’ the lyrics speak to his love for a straight man, while in ‘Not The Boy Next Door,’ he talks about not fitting in when returning to his childhood sweetheart in regional Australia from New York.”

The Boy From Oz
tells the biographical story of Peter Allen’s remarkable career and life, from his early days in Australia to his global success. The musical features Allen’s hits such as “I Still Call Australia Home,” “I Go To Rio,” “I Honestly Love You,” and “Tenterfield Saddler,” spanning a total of 46 songs that traverse his life’s journey.

Executive Producer and Theatrical Founder Andrew Gyopar expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming show. “Following the success of our mostly sold-out production of The Sound of Music, we are thrilled to bring The Boy From Oz to Melbourne in July. It’s been wonderful to see a real community emerge around Theatrical musicals, with so many audience members coming back again and again.”

Tickets for The Boy From Oz range from $58 to $79, ensuring an affordable experience for all. The production is part of Theatrical’s 2024 season, which also includes A Chorus Line set to open on September 7.

With a cast of 29, including talented dancers and ensemble members, The Boy From Oz promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience. Tickets are selling fast and are available at theatrical.com.au.
