My Brilliant Career -A Breathtaking Journey Through the Australian Outback
This was the best show I have reviewed this year!
Heading into the Sumner Theatre at Southbank, Â I was unfamiliar with Miles Franklin’s 1901 novel and its 1979 film adaptation. However, I was immediately captivated by the minimalist stage design, a vast expanse of dry grass that evoked the Australian outback.
Slowly the cast/musicians appeared on stage and began an impromptu jam session, setting the scene for what would be an enjoyable musical romp through outback Australia. Credit needs to go to set and costume designer Marg Horwell, who achieved so much with such a simple idea.
We meet the protagonist, heroine, Sybylla Melvyn, who, despite feeling stuck by her father’s poor decisions, is an imaginative, headstrong girl, looking for her place in the world, played by the effervescent Kala Gare.
Gare’s portrayal of Sybylla is both endearing and inspiring. Her powerful vocals and stage presence elevate the production, drawing the audience into the character’s world of dreams and aspirations. The supporting cast, comprised of skilled musicians and actors, seamlessly blend their talents, creating a harmonious and energetic performance.
One of the things I enjoyed about this production was that at times it felt like I was watching an Australian bush band deciding to do a bit of acting in between their songs. The 10 members of the cast/band had such good chemistry, I couldn’t help but feel enraptured by their catchy tunes. Notable songs (or my favorites I’ve been listening to since) included the piano-climbing ‘In the wrong key’, the cheeky ‘A little bit more’, and the playful ‘The Will’.
Director Anne-Louise Sarks has crafted a truly memorable production. The blend of music, drama, and comedy is both refreshing and engaging. She even evoked the first standing ovation I have given a show this year!
My Brilliant Career is a must-see for anyone who appreciates innovative theatre and Australian storytelling.
