Phoenix and Nel have superpowers.  They take a lot of care and do a lot of good.  But when celebrity chef Rae, arrives at one of their weekly meetings, she turns their world upside down.  As they transform from stealth crusaders to global superstars, their powers ramp up exponentially.  It’s amazing, until it isn’t!
I entered the Red Stitch Theatre for this world premiere production and got to see an immersive plain white set scattered with holes and circles which is very simple yet effective.  The house music playing as we filed into the theatre really set the scene for what we were about to witness.   The show begins abruptly with a blackout and the actors suddenly appearing when the lights came up.
In the role of Rae, Caroline Lee is a knockout!   Having seen her in a previous production I knew her comic timing was going to be on point.   Throughout the show she displayed impeccable character control and timing, she was downright hysterical and then towards the end became almost like a grandmother type figure when she became warm and nurturing towards another character who revealed their true self.
I loved Lucy Ansell’s performance as Phoenix, she too showed moments of hilarity and she added to it by being the force behind the 3 main characters in showing her super power, it was a joy to watch.  Her powerful moment in the final scene was heartbreaking and performed beautifully.
My favourite of them all was Leila Thaker as Nel.  I loved that from start to finish she was completely over the top and always rallying up the other 2, I like to say she was definitely the ‘sassiest’ of all three as she didn’t let anyone ignore her.
What I particularly loved about the whole concept of the show is that all 3 characters tried so hard to be bigger than the others in terms of proving their super powers, but in the end it was all about just being themselves and not trying to compete with each other that really shone through.
A big mention must also go to the production design by Romanie Harper and lighting design by Natalia Velasco Moreno who really brought the intensity and extended the actors performances.
Having seen a number of Red Stitch’s productions now, they continue to create great work.
