The 1812 Theatre in Upper Ferntree Gully offers a uniquely intimate and charming experience that has captivated audiences for decades. The theatre’s cozy ambiance, combined with its homely vibes, creates a welcoming atmosphere that makes every visit feel like a special occasion. This intimacy allows for a close connection between the performers and the audience, enhancing the overall theatrical experience.

Simon Levy’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby brings the roaring twenties to life with stunning theatricality. Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, passionately pursues the elusive Daisy Buchanan, while Nick Carraway, a young newcomer to Long Island, is drawn into their world of obsession, greed, and danger. The production captures the breathtaking glamour and decadent excess of the Jazz Age, creating an immersive experience that stays true to the spirit of the classic novel.

The cast did a wonderful job bringing The Great Gatsby to life. Despite limited stage space and set design, they compensated with exceptional acting skills and authentic accents that matched their characters perfectly. Each actor uniquely embodied their role, adding depth to the performance. Although the cast was small, they made a significant impact on the audience, particularly during the dramatic and violent scenes.

Their ability to convey the story’s intensity and emotion was truly impressive. The costumes were basic but effective, and they suited the era in which The Great Gatsby is set. The attire helped to evoke the 1920s atmosphere, despite their simplicity.

If you find yourself looking for something to do, go check out The Great Gatsby at The 1812 Theatre 16th May to 8th June.
